Possible benefits of pomegranate juice include being an antioxidant, which may help prevent cancer and other conditions, providing vitamin C, boosting digestive health, and reducing insulin resistance.

Molecular studies have indicated that ingredients in pomegranate extract could silence some of the genetic signals that contribute to osteoarthritis (OA). This suggests that pomegranate could help prevent the onset of this condition.

In a 2016 clinical trial, 38 people with OA of the knee consumed either pomegranate juice or no juice for 6 weeks. Results suggest that pomegranate juice helped reduce the breakdown of cartilage. The participants who consumed it reported better function and less stiffness than those who did not.

In the study, 32 people consumed either 8 ounces of pomegranate juice or other drink for 8 weeks. After 4 weeks, those who consumed pomegranate showed better scores on memory tests. fMRI scans also revealed increased brain activity during these tests.

Some older research suggests that the antioxidant activity in pomegranate could benefit people with type 2 diabetes. Specifically, there was evidence that compounds in pomegranate could help lower fasting blood glucose levels.

One pomegranate contains around 39 grams of sugar. If a person with diabetes wishes to consume pomegranate juice, they should do so while keeping their glucose levels within limits agreed with a doctor.

Background: Pomegranate juice has been associated with PSA doubling time (PSADT) elongation in a single-arm phase II trial. This study assesses biological activity of two doses of pomegranate extract (POMx) in men with recurrent prostate cancer, using changes in PSADT as the primary outcome.

Recent research has shown that dietary nitrate has favorable effects on blood flow and exercise performance. The purpose of this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study was to investigate the acute effects of pomegranate extract on blood flow, vessel diameter, and exercise performance in active individuals. Nineteen men and women (mean SD: age, 22.2 2.2 years; height, 174.8 10.7 cm; body mass, 71.9 13.5 kg) were randomly assigned to a placebo (PL) or pomegranate extract (PE) group. Participants performed a maximal oxygen consumption treadmill test to determine peak velocity (PV). Participants returned after 24-48 h and ingested either PL or PE. Brachial artery blood flow was assessed using ultrasound at baseline and 30 min post-ingestion (30minPI). Three treadmill runs to exhaustion were performed at 90%, 100%, and 110% PV. Blood flow was assessed immediately after each exercise bout and 30 min postexercise (30minPEx). After a 7-10 day washout, participants repeated the same procedures, ingesting the opposite supplement. Separate repeated measures ANOVAs were performed for blood flow, vessel diameter, and time to exhaustion (TTE). Blood flow was significantly augmented (p = 0.033) 30minPI with PE in comparison with PL. Vessel diameter was significantly larger (p = 0.036) 30minPEx with PE. Ingestion of PE was found to significantly augment TTE at 90% (p = 0.009) and 100% PV (p = 0.027). Acute ingestion of PE 30 min before exercise may enhance vessel diameter and blood flow and delay fatigue during exercise. Results of the current study indicate that PE is ergogenic for intermittent running, eliciting beneficial effects on blood flow.

In an effort to give that post a much needed face lift, I reshot some photos on deseeding a pomegranate, and I decided to make a step-by-step video tutorial on how to make pomegranate juice. I nearly forgot how delicious the juice tastes.

Conventional wisdom has it that the best pomegranates are the ones that have unblemished skin and are bright red on the outside. In my experience, that has not been the case. The best pomegranates, with deep ruby arils, are the ones that are slightly cracked and have some golden brown patches on the exterior (see the photos below). The sweetest pomegranates tend to be ones that I buy from the farmers market and not from the grocery store.

After I juiced the arils of one pomegranate and pressed the seeds to get the rest of the juice, I took one cup of water and put the seeds and pulp from it into the water and stirred them. After I let it settle for a few seconds, the seeds were on the bottom and the pulp was suspended -mostly- in the water. Then I slowly poured the water/pulp mixture through ANOTHER strainer (making sure there were no seeds falling out of the pouring) to catch the pulp. I then scraped and spooned only the pulp from the strainer and into the pure juice.

The project described was by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, National Institutes of Health, through Grant 1KL2TR001109. The content is solely the responsibility of the authors and does not necessarily represent the official views of the NIH. The pomegranate extract was donated by Stiebs Nature Elevated, Madera, CA. The treatment and placebo products were encapsulated and blinded by Dymatize Nutrition, Dallas, TX.

You can keep a pomegranate at room temperature for a week or two. Refrigeration can keep it fresh for up to three months. Keep it whole until you're ready to eat it. If you remove the seeds, keep them in the refrigerator.

Research has indicated that pomegranate may effectively lower blood pressure. It contains different antioxidants and bioactive polyphenols, which promotes cardiovascular health. A study found that those who drank pomegranate juice daily over the course of two weeks had significantly reduced blood pressure. (x)

Studies have shown that pomegranate juice reduces triglyceride levels, which may help prevent fatty deposits in arteries. Additional studies have confirmed the role that pomegranate antioxidants play in preventing the oxidation of cholesterol, which deters plaque formation. (x)

A study investigated the long-term effect of pomegranate juice on the memory of middle-aged and older adults. Over 12 months, the results showed that daily consumption of the fruit juice stabilized their ability to learn visual information. (x)

Another study determined through a battery of tests that middle-aged and older adults who drank 8 ounces of pomegranate juice a day improved their memory performance. The extensive research acknowledged the polyphenol components enhanced cerebral blood flow. (x)

The cardiovascular and antioxidant benefits of pomegranates may also help men with erectile dysfunction. Studies in rabbits have shown that pomegranate juice increases blood flow and increases erectile function. (x) While more research will allow us to see how these findings translate to humans, men who take pomegranate extract may see improved sexual health.

Research shows how high doses of pomegranate juice may help fight prostate cancer. (x) Some studies insist that it may help prevent the growth of breast cancer cells. (x) This research is still in its early stages, so more studies are necessary to substantiate these findings.

Research shows the high polyphenolic concentrations in pomegranate extract help reduce the effects of ultraviolet radiation such as sunburns, edema, skin cancer and more in numerous in vivo and in vitro studies. (x)

Because pomegranate extract may help lower your blood pressure, it can sometimes cause blood pressure to go too low. If your blood pressure drops while taking pomegranate extract, reduce the dosage or discontinue the supplement. Consult with your doctor before you resume.

Studies show how pomegranates might interfere with certain prescription medications. They conflict by inhibiting molecules that break down the medicine. Without these molecules, the level of the medication in your body may escalate. (x)

You can take pomegranate extract alone, but many consumers prefer to take it with food, such as a smoothie. Some people even use the powder in their cooking such as salad dressings, fruit salads, cold pasta dishes and vegetable casseroles. (x)

With a wide range of health benefits available for all ages, pomegranate powder is a potent natural supplement that you may want to try. Its antioxidant properties can help you fight inflammation, reduce plaque buildup in your arteries and fight tumor formation. Pomegranates may even have skin benefits.

Several years ago, however, my little culinary world was transformed (well, at least in regard to pomegranates)! I discovered a brilliant, super simple, non-messy, no-water way to extract the seeds. And it took less than a minute to remove the seeds from a whole pomegranate! 041b061a72
